How to Adopt Your New Greyhound

Adopting a Greyhound is simple and rewarding. We guide you every step of the way to ensure the perfect match for your family and lifestyle. Here’s how the process works:

1. Learn About Greyhounds

Start by researching to see if a Greyhound or Lurcher is the right fit for you. Visit our FAQ page and explore trusted online resources to understand their needs and personalities.

2. Submit Your Application via this link

Complete the Adoption Application by clicking on this link which will send you to a Google App. You can expect to hear back from our director within 1–2 days.

3. Home Visit and Approval

To finalize your application, we’ll arrange a home visit or virtual tour. Once approved, we’ll begin finding a Greyhound that suits your family’s lifestyle perfectly.

Helping Sighthounds in Peril

We are dedicated to rescuing and caring for sighthounds in need, focusing on Greyhounds and Lurchers from West Texas and surrounding areas. Our mission is to find loving homes and provide the support these remarkable dogs deserve.

Loving Homes Wanted

Our sweet dogs are ready to bring joy and companionship to new families. We ask an adoption fee of $200, which helps cover medical care and other essentials to ensure each dog’s well-being.

Adoption Process

  • We welcome all adoption applications and carefully consider each one. I personally contact every person or family who applies to ensure the best match.
  • It's perfectly okay to send an inquiry via the "Drop Us a Line" link if you aren't sure you want to adopt from APFUG--we want to answer any questions you may have.
  • Be sure to always check your email spam section if you've not heard back from us.
  • Please be considerate and notify the director if you have decided not to pursue the application (it's no fun getting ghosted!)
  • For applicants living outside the area, we offer virtual home visits, which have proven effective and convenient.
  • Once approved, adopters are typically asked to travel to Lubbock to meet and pick up their new companion.

Join Our Team

We’re looking for passionate volunteers to help care for Greyhounds and Lurchers. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact us directly to learn more about how to get involved. Please fill out the form at this link to apply.

Feel free to reach out anytime by phone or email.

Recent Adoptions!

Alexander adopts Jasper and renames him Jack!

What a perfect match! Alexander recently moved to ABQ. He was not a stranger to Greyhounds yet,  hadn't been able to adopt one on his own. But that changed quickly and on a sunny day in Tucumcari, he met us at Dunn Park and started his new adventure of being owned by a Lurcher. He Jack are having lots of fun exploring the ABQ together. Outstanding!!

Dr. Kendra Sutherlin and Nutmeg adopt Basil

Dr. Sutherlin practices at Live Oak Animal Hospital located in Lubbock. She had extensive experience with Greyhounds and Lurchers while living in the UK. We were so happy that she adopted Basil--who's 7-years young and was relinquished to our group in July. He gets along swell with her little terrier mix and is taking his job as greeter at the clinic very seriously!

Nico moves to Austin!

Sara and Philip spent all morning walking dogs at the kennel finally deciding to adopt Guinness who they have renamed Nico. From all reports Nico is thriving under their care and enjoying his new life in dog-friendly Austin!

Del adopts his 30th Greyhound...

Seriously, Del is an icon. He has loved over 30 Greyhounds and was missing not having one since Tatum recently passed away. Del has adopted four from us over the years including Tatum, Lexi, Kato, and now Shiner. Del and Shiner are in ABQ, along with Del's recent shelter rescue--a big goofy dog named Buddy. Did we mention that Shiner is having a blast!

Get in Touch

We’d love to hear from you—whether you're ready to adopt, have questions, or want to report a sighthound in need.

Interested in Adoption?

We welcome all adoption applications and give first preference to individuals or families in or near Lubbock. However, we’re also open to out-of-town and out-of-state adoptions, as long as:

  • A virtual home visit is possible
  • Travel distance is reasonable
  • There are good resources for greyhound owners in your area

Most adopters will need to travel to Lubbock to meet or pick up their dog, though meeting part-way may be possible. Each situation is considered on a case-by-case basis. We do not charge a processing fee to apply. Submit your application and let’s begin the conversation.

If You’ve Found a Dog Wearing Our Tag

Please contact us immediately if you’ve found a Greyhound or Lurcher wearing one of our group’s ID tags.

If You have found a Greyhound or Lurcher in a Dangerous Situation--Please contact us so we can help.

We want to help and have been notified many times about dogs that are out loose on the streets, in nearby shelters, abandoned, injured, or other similar situations where they plainly need our help and support. Keep in mind, resources are limited and proximity to Lubbock has to be considered. If we cannot help, we will try and offer advice and suggestions.
